Recent Blog Post: Opening Thoughts

Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

  • Kevin Garnett owners can rest a bit easier given the way he was moving around the court in the opener. It's a bit presumptuous to declare him completely healthy and fully recovered (fromoffseason knee surgery), but he is certainly headed in the right direction. With Glen Davis (thumb) out 6-8 weeks, Doc Rivers will be almost forced to play Garnett 30-plus minutes a game. This obviously bodes well for his per-game production, but could be problematic for his long-term health. Remember that KG already has 42,000+ minutes-worth of wear and tear (playoffs included), so it would be prudent of Rivers to not get too far ahead of himself here.
  • Although Rasheed Wallace was relatively quiet in his Celtics debut (12 points, three rebounds, two blocks, three treys), he should still end up being a big-time bargain for owners who were able to land him past the eight round of their drafts. One of the biggest edges the Celtics had over the Cavs in the opener was their ability to space the floor and knock down treys. Sheed had a big hand in this and will remain a major part of the rotation as the first man off the bench.
  • You can't talk enough about Rondo's tenacious, no-quit attitude on the glass. His six-rebound performance was particularly embarrassing for Kendrick Perkins, who managed to grab just one rebound. Rondo could very well dethrone Jason Kidd this season as the league leader amongst point guards in rebound rate.
  • If Anthony Parker's 'ceiling' without Delonte West (case of the crazies) is 10 points, two treys, and minimal contributions elsewhere, then I'm definitely not buying. LeBron James has been lobbying hard for West to be activated and inserted back into the lineup, and it's only a matter of time until Mike Brown, Danny Ferry, and this ominous 'support team' gives in. The Cavs are in fact LeBron's kingdom.

Washington Wizards vs. Dallas Mavericks

  • While I have been extremely hesitant to endorse a KG comeback, I have had no problem endorsing Gilbert Arenas as a top-25 player this season. Arenas dazzled in the Wizards' season opener, pulling out all the tricks from the offensive arsenal that we became accustomed to seeing from '05-'07 -- the range on his jumper, the quick first step to blow by defenders, and the ability to create his own shot around the basket. He even managed to dish out nine assists. One thing we should start to take seriously though is his intention coming into this year to cut down on his three-point attempts. Arenas only attempted four three-pointers on Tuesday, a significant cut back from the six to seven treys that he has routinely attempted in the past.
  • Andray Blatche did his best Antawn Jamison impression, totaling 20 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots. He will continue to be an excellent short-term option whileAntawn Jamison (shoulder) is sidelined for another three to five weeks.
  • Mike Miller and Randy Foye could prove to be two sneaky-good options this year to have on your bench. Both were in positions last year where they were expected to take too much on at once, and could be in store for much-improved campaigns with Arenas, Butler, and Jamison (eventually) drawing a lot of the attention from opposing defenses and taking some of the pressure off.
  • The Mavericks looked out of sync for much of the game and deferred to Dirk Nowitzki way more than they should have. Don't read a ton into the early struggles of Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion and Jason Terry - they just need some more time to find their rhythm and get back into the swing of things.

Houston Rockets vs. Portland Trail Blazers

  • You have to like Aaron Brooks' fantasy outlook this year, especially with him getting a game-high 41 minutes on Tuesday. He was easily the best player out there on the court (his +7 dwarfed the +/- of Houston's other four starters) and really the only one who was able to create his own shot.
  • Don't read a whole lot into Luis Scola's early troubles as he was simply overmatched and outsized by the Blazers' trio of LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla. The double-doubles should start to pour in sooner or later. If anything, now would be an opportune time to buy low.
  • If it wasn't clear who the biggest beneficiary of the Nicolas Batum (shoulder) injury would be, it is now. Travis Outlaw made the most of his 32 minutes off the bench, scoring a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go along with three treys and two steals. With Batum out for the majority of the season, Outlaw should be a viable utility option for owners in standard 12-team leagues. He'll offer considerably more fantasy potential than Martell Webster because of his multi-category potential.
  • Greg Oden's performance on the offensive end on Tuesday really leaves a lot left to be desired and was pretty dismal to be honest. Sure, he made up for it with 12 rebounds and five blocked shots, but it was against a completely undersized and overmatched frontcourt. And for all the talk about how he worked on his foul troubles in the offseason, Oden still picked up five fouls in just 26 minutes of action. Tack on his seven turnovers, and you've got me extremely disappointed with Oden's season debut.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers

  • For the most part the stat lines played out like we expected on the Clippers' end - Eric Gordon took command of the offense and proved that he is the real deal, Baron Davis continued to be unmotivated and a chucker, while Kaman came through with a bounceback effort. Expect these stat and storylines to remain consistent throughout the season.
  • Craig Smith has consistently been an extremely solid source of production on a per-minute basis and he cashed in on his opportunity with Blake Griffin (knee) sidelined, totaling 12 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes of action. 14+ team league owners, take note.
  • Andrew Bynum was flat-out dominant against the formidable frontcourt duo of Kaman and Marcus Camby, finishing with 26 points and 13 rebounds on 9-of-15 shooting. His knee and shoulder injuries are still an obvious concern but he's become a real force to be reckoned with when healthy. Pau Gasol owners have legitimate reasons to be concerned.
