Recent Blog Post: Your Playoff Picks Here
San Jose seems to be a trendy pick among our hockey writers. Mark McLarney, Peter Maingot and Jan Levine all have San Jose playing in the Cup Finals, and Pittsburgh seems to be a popular pick for their opponent. Who do you like? Which top seed team is going to be an upset victim? Who is your playoff pool MVP?

| At long last the Dany Heatley saga has finally come to an end. While Senators fans may think they got the short end of the stick in this deal, the simple fact of the matter is that had Dany remained on the team, he would have poisoned the locker room and weakened the team's chemistry. Sens GM Bryan Murray couldn't take that chance. In short dear reader, this is addition by subtraction. While Heatley's goal production will ultimately be missed, his one-dimensional offensive game, poor defense, and weak skating won't be. And let's not forget his attitude. Heatley's stated reason for leaving the team (i.e., his "diminished" role) never rang true and never will. By acquiring Dany Heatley, San Jose's GM Doug Wilson has effectively handcuffed his team with four big contracts and a player who's become a pariah in Canada. How long before Heatley tires of San Jose? I leave that up to the readers to decide.
The key to this deal from Ottawa's perspective is Milan Michalek. The 24-year-old winger is big, has speed to spare, great hands, and excellent defensive awareness. Ottawa hasn't seen this type of player since the days of Marian Hossa. Michalek plays on the penalty kill and should form quite the pairing with Daniel Alfredsson in short-handed situations. The young winger has a lot of upside and is signed to a reasonable long-term contract.
The other player coming to Ottawa is Jonathan Cheechoo and is the wild card in this deal. Murray is hoping that Cheechoo can hit 20-25 goals and with a change of scenery, perhaps it's possible. The former Rocket Richard winner has been hobbled by various injuries the past couple of years and was buried on San Jose's third line last year. While he's not a strong skater, he has a lot of heart and great hands. He'll likely become a fan favourite in Canada's Capital.
So, where does this leave the Senators as a team? Ultimately, this writer thinks it makes them deeper both offensively and defensively, and more importantly, a better team in the truest sense of the word. With the deft drafting that Murray and his scouts have done the past two years, Ottawa has a nice group of youngsters in the cupboard which they didn't have when former GM John Muckler essentially destroyed their prospect depth with bad trades and horrible drafting. While things may seem a little dreary right now, and expectations are certainly low, Ottawa should challenge for a playoff spot this year. |
