Recent Blog Post: The Czar of all Russias…
Lots of fans wonder if Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby or even Evgeni Malkin might be the best player in the NHL. After watching Thursday’s game featuring Washington against Pittsburgh, I don’t think Ovechkin really cares who’s the best in the league, but who’s the best Russian playing in the NHL.
Never before have I witnessed a superstar like Ovie continually go out of his way to hit, and sometimes head hunt, another superstar like Malkin the way Ovechkin did on Thursday. At one point Ovie steamed across the ice in an attempt to board Malkin only to see the Penguins star duck right before what would’ve been a hellacious impact.
Forget Crosby vs. Ovechkin – Ovechkin vs Malkin is worth the price of admission. These two always play with a physical edge (especially Ovie), but nothing like they did on Thursday.
How should the Penguins respond? Send fighters Eric Godard or Paul Bissonnette out against Ovechkin? Would that set up an extended Washington PP? Should Malkin drop the gloves with Ovechkin? What happened? The Penguins chose to do nothing and Malking kept getting run.
It was an amazing sight to see the top two Russians do battle against each other.
It was pretty obvious Ovechkin cares more about who’s the best Russian than anything else.

| With the nucleus of their Eastern Conference championship club in place for the long haul, the Penguins turned their attention to rewarding head coach Michel Therrien.
The Penguins and Therrien agreed to terms Friday on a new three-year deal that will keep the former Jack Adams Award finalist under contract through the 2010-11 season.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Penguins did reveal that Therrien will receive a pay raise next season.
Therrien, 44, has posted a 108-80-27 record since being hired by the Penguins in December 2005.

| The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Michel Therrien to a one-year contract extension Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed for the deal, which runs through the 2008-09 season. Therrien, 43, assumed the post in Pittsburgh on December 15, 2005 - less than three months into Crosby's rookie season. He guided the Penguins to a 14-29-8 mark over the final 51 games that season and made headlines at one point for publicly questioning his team's effort. But the young Penguins improved by leaps and bounds under Therrien's guidance last season, going 47-24-11 and earning the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh recorded 105 points, the second-highest total in franchise history, and improve by 47 points in the standings - the fourth-best single-season jump in league history. Therrien benefited greatly from the development of Crosby, who became the youngest player to win the scoring title this past season and won both the Hart Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award.
